2nd grade sacrament prep
In traditional preparation, children in 2nd grade prepare to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. Students participate in regular religious education classes, while parents and students also work together preparing at home with additional preparation materials provided by the DRE. Parents should also note special parent meetings, retreats, and rehearsals throughout the 2nd grade year.

curriculumGo Seek Find Discover God's Treasures
Instead of using a traditional textbook or workbook, children interact with and explore The Catholic Children's Bible, seeing how Scripture relates to the themes they are learning about—in a way they can understand. Children track their journey through Scripture to their destination of celebrating the Sacraments using colorful treasure maps and stickers. Fun, hands-on activities get them up out of their seats, moving and engaged in what they're learning.
As part of each week's lesson, we will be sending home the activity page. On the back you will find a "Family Page" with content you can review at home as well as suggested activities. As part of the preparation, we would like you to review the family page content each week and try one of those activities. **In case of absence, please keep your child on track by using the Home Guides to complete the lessons at home, or try the eLearning lessons (login info was sent home - contact Sherie if you need it). *Home Guide Training Video for Parents* -Reconciliation Home Guide -Eucharist Home Guide |

weekly READINGS at home
Parents are the first educators of their children in the ways of faith and holiness. They are also called by God to be the best educators.

other things to be working on...
- Know your Prayers – Before making their first confession, children are expected to be fairly comfortable with their basic Catholic prayers. Often, the priest hearing their confession will give them a penance that includes reciting such prayers. Basic prayers that should be known before making their first confession are the Our Father (or Lord’s Prayer), the Hail Mary, the Glory Be and the Act of Contrition.
- Examination of Conscience - Before approaching God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation we are all called to examine our conscience. You can use the Examination of Conscience handout below to help your child prepare for their First Reconciliation. Consider practicing their confession with them by role playing the parts of the priest and the confessor, then switch roles.
- Attend Mass Weekly! – The best way to prepare your child to celebrate their first Holy Communion is to take them to Mass each week. Help your child practice by inviting them to join the communion line with you.
NOTE: Their arms should be crossed over their chest so as to receive a blessing rather than the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
